918 Spyder

The almost-to-great-to-be-real 918 Spyder no longer holds concept status and has been confirmed for a limited production run that will likely be somewhere near 750 to 1,250 units. The 918 Spyder combines racing design with electric motors to offer a fascinating range of qualities. Porsche plans to provide super-low emission levels with an estimated fuel consumption of approximately 94 mpg. Despite its green car rating, it is also intended to offer the performance of a super sports car with a lap time on the Nurburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.

This open two-seater is powered by a high-revving V-8 developing more than 500 horsepower and a maximum engine speed of 9,200 rpm as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 horsepower. The V-8 combustion engine is the next step in the evolution of the highly successful 3.4- liter power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned mid-ship, in front of the rear axle, giving the car excellent balance and the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track. The energy reservoir is a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery positioned behind the passenger cell.

Power is transmitted to the wheels by a seven-speed PDK transmission that feeds the power of the electric drive system to the rear axle. The front-wheel electric drive powers the wheels through a fixed transmission ratio.

A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose among four different running modes: The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone, with a range of up to 16 miles. In the Hybrid mode, the 918 Spyder uses both the electric motors and the combustion engine as a function of driving conditions and requirements, offering a range from particularly fuel-efficient all the way to extra-powerful. The Sport Hybrid mode uses both drive systems, but with the focus on performance. Most of the drive power goes to the rear wheels, with Torque Vectoring serving to additionally improve the car's driving dynamics. In the Race Hybrid mode the drive systems are focused on pure performance with the highest standard of driving dynamics on the track, running at the limit to their power and dynamic output. With the battery sufficiently charged, a push-to-pass button feeds in additional electrical power (E-Boost), when overtaking or for even better performance.

Like the drivetrain, the lightweight body structure of the Porsche 918 Spyder also bears DNA carried over from the track. The modular structure with its monocoque bodyshell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP) and liberal use of magnesium and aluminum not only reduce weight to below 3,285 lbs. but also ensure supreme driving precision thanks to a high level of torsional stiffness.

The driver and passenger are not only embedded in contoured sports bucket seats but also form part of the cockpit. The cockpit offers a glimpse at the potential interior architecture of future Porsche super sports cars. The three free-standing circular dials for road speed (left), engine speed (middle) and energy management (right) would appear to come directly from a racing car in the 60s.

The Porsche 918 Spyder concept also comes with further innovative functions such as the Range Manager. After being activated in the Center Display, the Range Manager uses the map in the navigation system to present the remaining range the car is able to cover, naturally allowing the driver to influence that range through the appropriate choice of power and performance.

Porsche Showcases 60 Years of New and Rare Sports Car Highlights
at the 2010 Monterey Classic Car Weekend

The Monterey Historic Weekend traditionally focuses on the most coveted automobiles from around the world, but rarely have vehicles with a "hybrid" designation so forcefully commanded the anticipation of attending enthusiasts.  Porsche aims to change that status quo by proving just how tempting - and potent - Porsche's Intelligent Performance can be.  The German automaker is making its point with the new 918 Spyder, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racecar, and the Cayenne S Hybrid - all joining a collection of Porsche classics and contemporary models on display during the Monterey festivities.

The annual gathering of automotive aficionados during the August 9 - 15 Monterey Peninsula Automotive Week is also a fitting venue to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary year in America.  In addition to introducing its new portfolio of hybrid cars, Porsche will be unveiling a new web site to go live next week that will feature contests, videos, stories and images, all celebrating the cars and people that put Porsche on the United States map six decades ago.

"Automotive passion is always alive and thriving within the Porsche community, but it's particularly heated at this extraordinary event," said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America. "Where else can you see the evolution of Porsche in America so magnificently displayed, from early sports cars like our 356 through our newest intelligence performance powerhouse, the 918 Spyder ?"

Among the Porsche models on display throughout the Monterey peninsula, the first North American public appearance of the 918 Spyder concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, August 15 will be a highlight. Just recently approved for production, the fuel-sipping, ultra-high-performance super sports car has already been pre-ordered by over 1000 enthusiasts.

With the potential of recording 78 mpg, the 918 Spyder is an impressive showcase of Porsche's Intelligent Performance philosophy, but it's not alone in getting performance enthusiasts to "think green."  Motorsports fans will have the opportunity to check out the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid August 12 - 15.  The race car will be based at the Porsche Zentrum, a specially-built facility open to visitors located up Peter Hayes Hill on the compounds of the Pebble Beach Lodge.  Attendees will also have a unique opportunity to see the car and chat with Porsche Works racer Patrick Long at "The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering" from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m on Friday, August 13.  On Saturday, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be showcased at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (formerly the Monterey Historic Automobile Races) at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and then alongside the 918 Spyder at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday.

The Quail Lodge will also be the place to see some of the world's finest Porsche classics.  Four rare automobiles from the Porsche Museum in Germany are en route to Monterey.  Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful lines of a 1955 and 1958 356 Speedster, a 1960 356 B Carrera 2000 GS Carrera GT and a 1962 356 Carrera 2 Cabrio.  Newer Porsche siblings are also on display, including new and latest models available for consumer test drives.

Porsche 911 Ranked Number One in Vehicle Satisfaction

AutoPacific Survey Confirms 911 Meets and Exceeds Customer's Expectations

In a survey of 42,000 owners rating their new 2010 model year cars and trucks, Porsche owners have ranked the 911 as the best sports car in satisfying customers, according to the 14th Annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA) by AutoPacific.

The AutoPacific VSA's are based on owner's ratings of their new 2010 model year cars and trucks across dozens of key vehicle attributes. The awards have become an industry benchmark for measuring how satisfied an owner is with his/her new car. AutoPacific is a California-based automotive marketing and product-consulting firm.

This is not the first time the iconic 911 model has been chosen as the winner of the Vehicle Satisfaction Award.

"Vehicles that score highest in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards are delivering value and satisfaction across a wide range of attributes," said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. "The winners perform well in 48 separate categories that objectively measure the ownership experience."

Each year the VSA establish numerical car ratings for virtually every passenger vehicle and light truck in the United States market. The final results come from calculating owner input across a number of areas that are related to a vehicle's attributes, including: exterior styling, exterior size, passenger roominess, cargo space, driver's seat comfort, driver's seat visibility, interior technology, interior lighting, power and acceleration, ease of getting in and out, interior storage compartments, ride, handling, safety features and tires and wheels.

"For Porsche this is a very important award because it independently demonstrates just how satisfied our owners are about the new-generation 911, which was launched about a year and a half ago," said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America, Inc. "By not concentrating on one area of the 911's attributes, it shows there is a very comprehensive satisfaction for the overall ownership experience with this model."

Porsche 2010 911 combines a high-level of best-in-class performance and handling attributes with optimized overall fuel efficiency and luxury amenities.

PANAMERA, CAYENNE, AND 918 SPYDER

EFFICIENT, LIGHT, AND FAST

Celebrating the World Premiere of the new Panamera and Panamera 4 at Auto China 2010 in Beijing, Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, Stuggart, is rapidly enlarging the Panamera model range. Following the successful start into the market of Porsche's fourth model series last year, the new entry-level versions of this outstanding Gran Turismo will be available from May 2010.

Like the proven V8 models already bringing home more than 50 awards worldwide, both the Panamera and the Panamera 4 are unique Gran Turismo combining sporting character with superior comfort and practical, everyday driving qualities. Both models are powered by a newly developed 3.6-litre V6 featuring Direct Fuel Injection and delivering maximum output of 300 HP (220KW) plus peak torque of 400 Nm/295 lb-ft. In line with Porsche's usual model designations the Panamera conveys its power to the road via its rear wheels, while the Panamera 4 comes standard with active all-wheel drive.

Porsche's new Gran Turismo models, just like the new Cayenne Hybrid S celebrating its Asian Debut at the Beijing Auto Show, offer the outstanding qualities of the consistent Porsche Intelligent Performance devlopment strategy: Featuring new technologies such as the Auto Start-Stop function, all three models make do with well under ten liters of fuel/100km in the New European Driving Cycle.

In the worlds of Michael Macht, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG:"Both the new Cayenne and the Panamera help to make China Porsche's most significant growth market with the largest potential also in future. In the 2010 calendar year we expect sales in China of well over 10,000 units. Porsche is also confident that sales will continue to grow by a double-digit percentage also in the years to come, with the number of dealerships increasing from currently 27 to 35 in the course of this year alone."

Presenting the concept study of a high-performance mid-engined sports car with highly efficient, low-emission drivetrain technology in Beijing. Porsche is once again proving the company's competence in hybrid power at Auto China 2010. The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing technology with electric mobility to provide a truly fascinating range of qualities: On the one hand the emissions of a small compact car of just 70 grams of C02 per kilometre on three litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, on the other hand the performance of a super sports car accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in just under 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of more than 320 km/h, and lapping the Nurburgring-Nordschleife in less than seven minutes and thirty seconds, faster than the Porsche Carrera GT.

Sixty Years of Porsche Production in Stuttgart=Zuffenhausen

The home of today's Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has a very special sound in the world of motoring: Zuffenhausen. Indeed, Zuffenhausen is far more than "just" a production plant rich in tradition for Porsche AG, since it is here in Zuffenhausen that the heart of the Company beats to this very day. Zuffenhausen has been Porsche's home address for more than 70 years and more than one million Porsche sports cars have been built here in Stuttgart since 1950.

The Porsche Design and Construction office moved from Kronenstrasse 24 in downtown Stuttgart to the new group of buildings in the District of Zuffenhausen way back in June 1938. Right from the beginning, important chapters in the history of the automobile were then written in Porsche's home plant: This is where the first series of the car destined to become the Volkswagen Beetle was built in 1938, followed in 1939 by the Type 64 as the great-grandfather of all Porsche sports cars to come in later years. Originally planned for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race, this aerodynamic, highly streamline sports car became the trendsetter for all Porsche models to follow.

After the first few units of the Porsche 356 had been built in the Austrian town of
Gmünd as of 1948, Porsche returned to Stuttgart as a genuine "car city" in late 1949. With the Porsche Plant in Zuffenhausen still being occupied at the time by the US military, Porsche first rented a production hall on the premises of the nearby Reutter & Co. Gmbh Coachbuilding and Body Construction Plant, starting to prepare production in early 1950. With the first Type 356 being completed in Stuttgart on April 6, 1950, overall production up to the end of the year amounted to 369 units.

The success of Porsche's sports cars in borne out clearly not only by the Company's sales figures, but also by the further expansion of the production facilities in Zuffenhausen. The buildings forming Porsche Plant 2 designed by the well-known architect Rolf Gutbrod were completed in 1952 and in 1956 the 10,000th Porsche 356 left the plant, which was consistently enlarged and upgraded over the years. Porsche Plant 3 followed in 1960, also housing the Sales and Customer Service Departments.

Immediately after the introduction of the Porsche 911, Porsche KG, as the Company was still called at the time, took over the Reutter Coachbuilding and Body Construction Company in 1964 with its workforce of approximately 1,000 employees. Today the complete 911 model series as well as models of the Boxster series and all Porsche engines are built in Zuffenhausen.

The Plant is split up into the Bodyshop, Paint shop, Vehicle Assembly, Upholstery, Engine Assembly and Test Dynamometers. To ensure flexible production in a confined area, Porsche has developed special solutions including multi-floor production in the Bodyshop and Vehicle Assembly. A further special feature is that Porsche's series models are built together with the racing versions on one and that same assembly line. As yet a further highlight a new, particularly ecological Paint shop will be opened in 2011. Currently being built in the direct vicinity of Plant 1 and 5, the new Paint shop will be situated on the former premises of
Dürr AG purchased by Porsche in spring of 2008.

The new Porsche Museum was opened in January 2009 as an additional pledge to Zuffenhausen. Here, virtually on the Company's home ground, some 80 historical cars and exhibits from the history of the Company are presented in an exhibition area of 60,200 square feet. As the most spectacular building project commissioned by Porsche, the Porsche Museum has not only gone down in the history of the company, but also enriches the entire Stuttgart Region as an outstanding highlight in culture and architecture.

The Porsche Museum in honoring the 60th anniversary of Porsche in Zuffenhausen with a special exhibition: The beginnings of and the ongoing development of production at Zuffenhausen are being presented by a series of photos in this exhibition. A further outstanding highlights is the first Porsche 356 Coupe built in Zuffenhausen shown for the first time in the Museum after an unusual restoration process.

Porsche Top Brand in J.D. Power and Associates Dependability Study
Has Fewest Problems of Any Manufacturer

According to a quality study by J.D. Power and Associates, Porsche continues to meet and exceed the long-term quality demands of its customers in the United States. Porsche recorded the top score of all brands surveyed in the JD. Power and Associates 2010 Vehicle Dependability Study.

The study measured problems experienced by original owners of three-year-old (2007 model year) vehicles, including 198 different problem symptoms across all areas of the vehicle. Overall dependability is determined by the level of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

Based on this measurement, Porsche had the fewest problems and was the top brand in this important dependability study.

"For Porsche this is very significant," said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO, Porsche Cars North America. "It confirms that our cars meet the full spectrum of our customers' very demanding expectations well into the ownership experience."

According to J.D. Power and Associates, among new-vehicle shoppers, perception of quality and dependability is the most influential factor in their decision to purchase a specific vehicle model.

Highly Efficient and Ultra-Fast Plug-in Hybrid Super Sports Car Unveiled in Geneva

High Efficient and Ultra-Fast Plug-in Hybrid Super Sports Car Unveiled

Who said green cars can't be mean? Not Porsche. On the eve of the Geneva Auto Show, the Stuttgart-based company took the wraps off the 918 Spyder Concept, a 2-seat mid-engine supercar with hybrid and electric drive technology. Just how fast is this thing? Well, Porsche says the 918 Spyder Concept hits 100km/h (62mph) in less than 3.2 seconds, and it blasts to a top speed of 198 mph. Not only that, it laps the Nurburgring in less than 7 minutes 30 seconds, which means it's even faster than the hallowed Carrera GT.

Just how green is it? Porsche says that, when driven accordingly, the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder Concept gets an outstanding 78 mpg, with an emission level of just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The 918 Spyder Concept is powered by a high-revving V-8 related to the 3.4-liter in the Porsche RS Spyder racing car. In 918 Spyder form, this mid-mounted engine revs to 9200 rpm and produces more than 500 bhp. Electric motors at the front and rear axles add an additional 218 horsepower to the output. The V-8's power, and that of the rear electric motor, reaches the Spyder Concept's rear wheels via a 7-speed PDK gearbox. The drive to the front wheels is pure electric, via a fixed ratio. The liquid -cooled lithium-ion battery pack behind the cockpit can be charged at home, or by brake regeneration.

Four distinct driving modes are available. E Drive is solely electric power, with a range of up to 16 miles. In hybrid mode, electric power and gasoline power are used as conditions warrant, in ways designed to maximize economy or performance. In Sport Hybrid mode, in which both drive systems maximize performance, most of the power goes rearward, aided by torque vectoring to help the car's dynamics. Lastly, there's Race Hybrid mode for the utmost performance, such as running at the limit on the racetrack. In this mode, there's even a "push to pass" E-Boost feature that feeds in added electrical power for overtaking...or better lap times.

The 918 Spyder's modular chassis is made of CFP (carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic), while Porsche has also employed lots of magnesium and aluminum to keep the car's weight down to a reasonably svelte 3285 lb. Aesthetically, the 918 Spyder looks very much like a relative of the Carrera GT. It also looks like it would be perfectly at home on the road or the track. Variable aerodynamics, especially around the rear spoiler, are necessary in a car with such a fast top speed, and the rear hoods extending back from the headrests accommodate retractable air intakes that provide a ram-air function.

Porsche says the interior of the 918 Spyder Concept offers a glimpse of the future, and we're glad that it remains driver-oriented with circular dial gauge. Modernity is addressed via the center console, which has a touch screen for what Porsche calls "intuitive" control of the car's functions.

Lastly, the 918 Spyder Concept is fitted with a Range Manager. Using the map in the satellite navigation system, the Range Manager displays the remaining range the Spyder is able to cover. And in cities, it will tell you if you can reach your destination on electric power alone. Just the thing to make sure you arrive at the Nurburgring with a full tank.

We admit the Porsche 918 Spyder Concept took us by surprise at Geneva. But we very much like what we see, and the fact that this Porsche has lapped the Nurburgring proves it's more than a "pie in the sky: concept. It has real production possibilities; and we're delighted that Porsche sees driving fun as a vital part of its future.

First Ancestor of All Porsche Sports Cars on Show in America for the First Time.

Porsche Museum supports special exhibition at the High Museum of Art Stuttgart. The Museum run by Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, Stuggart, Germany, is sending its legendary Type 64 Berlin-Rome Car on a long journey. Befitting the 60th anniversary of Porsche in America, the aluminum body of Type 64 will be presented from March 21st to June 20th 2010 at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, taking the first and most prominent exhibit at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen to a new location outside of Germany for the first time.

The High Museum of Art is one of the world's leading art museums. In its special exhibiton "The Allure of the Automobile", the High Museum of Art is expressing its recognition of outstanding automotive developments in the period 1930 to 1960, focusing on differences in the development of American and European design. Type 64 will be presented next to other icons in the world of the automobile from Buggatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Ferrari, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Cadillac and Tucker as a synthesis of innovative construction and design, supreme craftsmanship, and exceptional design.

The High Museum of Art is one of the world's leading art museums. In its special exhibition "The Allure of the Automobile", the High Museum of Art is expressing its recognition of outstanding automotive developments in the period 1930 to 1960, focusing on differences in the development of American and European design. Type 64 will be presented next to other icons in the world of the automobile from Bugatti, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Ferrari, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Cadillac and Tucker as a synthesis of innovative construction and design, supreme craftsmanship, and exceptional design.

Type 64 is of very special significance to the history of the Porsche brand: Built in 1938/39 under the guidance of Ferdinand Porsche, this unique car already had all the features taht make sports cars from Zuffenhausen so very special the world over to this day: lightweight construction and superior aerodynamics, exceptional performance, reliable technology, and that unique design so characteristic of a Porsche. Originally developed for the Berlin-Rome long-distance race, Type 64, due to the war, never entered a race in its lifetime. But it marks an essential milestone en route to the first Porsche, Type 356 built in 1948.

The car's streamlined aluminum body already showed distinctive indications later to be admired in all of Porsche's sports cars, its DNA living on in the Porsche 356 through the Porsche 911 all the way to the Panamera. The symbiosis of motorsport requirements and the use of production elements made the car a perfect grand tourer able to reach an average speed on public roads back in 1939 of more than 130 km/h or 80mph. No surprise, therefore, that Ferdinand Porsche himself used Type 64 for long journeys.

Accompanying the new construction of the Porsche Mueum in Stuggart-Zuffenhausen, the aluminum body of Type 64 was rebuilt by experts in years of painstaking craftsmanship. Ever since the Museum was opened in January 2009, Type 64 has marked the beginning of the Museum Tour thrilling visitors from all over the world through its cultural impact and unique flair alone.

While Type 64 is being presented to the public in Atlanta, the Porsche Museum will be displaying the skeleton structure of the Type 64 body until the end of June 2010 - a skeleton made of wood upon which the 1.2-millimeter aluminum panels were hammered into shape.

Porsche Adds New Panamera Models to its Gran Turismo Lineup

Sporting a new 300-horsepower V6 engine, the Panamera and Panamera 4 deliver Porsche driving excitement, high comfort, and excellent fuel efficiency

Porsche Cars North America today announced the addition of two new Panamera models, just three months after successfully launching the first four-door Gran Turismo in three V8 flavors: the Panamera S, the Panamera 4S and the Panamera Turbo.

The Panamera and Panamera 4, the model line's new entry level versions, will be in Porsche dealerships in June 2010. Both feature a brand-new 3.6-liter V6 with Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) developing 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Panamera transmits its power to the road via the rear wheels, while the Panamera 4 comes standard with active all-wheel drive. U.S. models will include Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK), Porsche's new and revolutionary seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, as standard equipment.

The Panamera and Panamera 4 are examples of the Porsche Intelligent Performance development strategy. Equipped with the PDK gearbox and the Auto Start Stop function, Porsche expects these new models to be considerably more fuel efficient than their normally aspirated V8 siblings. Official U.S. EPA fuel economy figures will be announced closer to the new models' on-sale date, and both meet the strict EU5 emission standard in Europe and the LEV standard in the United States. And like all Panamera models, they are not subject to a gas-guzzler tax.

Porsche has always focused on superior efficiency and performance, and in the case of these new Panamera models these long-held tenets are not mutually exclusive. One example of this ideal combination of qualities is consistent lightweight construction with the axles, doors, hood, front fenders and tailgate all made of aluminum. Likewise, the brand new 90-degree angle V6 powerplant built at Porsche's engine plant in Zuffenhausen is approximately 66 lbs. lighter than the Porsche V8 in the Panamera S and 4S. This contributes to the low overall curb weight, which in the case of the Panamera with the PDK transmission is just 3,880 lbs. (1,730 kg).

Like the proven V8 models, both the Panamera and the Panamera 4, as genuine Gran Turismos, combine a sporting character with a high standard of comfort and everyday driving qualities. Steel suspension with variable dampers is standard, and adaptive air suspension with additional air volume on demand is available as an option. This provides a wide range of suspension qualities and features, with a high level of motoring comfort on the one hand and extremely sporting driving dynamics on the other.

Both models will be making their world debut at the Beijing Motor Show on April 23, 2010.

Since its U.S. introduction in October 2009, the Panamera has received numerous awards and recognition. The Panamera Turbo was named Playboy Magazine's 2010 Car of the Year. Others include an Edmunds Inside Line Editors' Most Wanted Award, inclusion in Edmunds.com's Top Recommended Vehicles list, two Car and Driver Editors Choice Awards (Sports Sedans and Luxury Sedans), Bloomberg Car of the Year, About.com Cars Best New Cars of 2010, and NADAguides.com's Car of the Month for January.

PORSCHE 911 GT3 R HYBRID

Stuggart. Exactly 110 years after Ferdinand Porsche developed the world's first car with hybrid drive, the Lohner Porsche Semper Vivus, Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, Stuggart, is once again taking up this visionary drive concept in production-based GT racing: During the Geneva Motor Show, a Porsche 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive is making its debut, opening up a new chapter in the history of Porsche with more than 20,000 wins in 45 years scored by the extremely successful Porsche 911 in racing trim.

The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. In this case, electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.

The flywheel generator itself is an electric motor with its rotor spinning at speeds of up to 40,000 rpm, storing energy mechanically as rotation energy. The flywheel generator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. Then, whenever necessary, that is when accelerating out of a bend or when overtaking, the driver is able to call up extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, the flywheel being slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode and thus supplying up to 120 kW to the two electric motors at the front from its kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately 6-8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted-and thus wasted- into heat upon every application of the brakes, is now highly efficiently converted into additional drive power.

Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This again increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducing the weight of the tank or making pitstops less frequent.

After its debut in Geneva the 911 GT3 R Hybrid will be tested in long distance races on the Nürburgring. The highlight of this test program will be the 24 Hours on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring on May 15th and 16th. The focus is not on the 911 GT3 R Hybrid winning the race, but rather serving as a spearhead in technology and a "racing laboratory" providing know-how on the subsequent use of hybrid technology in road-going sports cars.

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche: More power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower C02 emissions - on the track and on the road.

Note: Images of the new Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid are available to accredited journalists in the Porsche Database at http://presse.porsche.de/. Footage is available to registered users at http://www.thenewsmarket.com/porsche.

NEXT TOP MODEL

PORSCHE 911 TURBO S

Stuttgart. The engineers at Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new top-of-the-range sports car for the customer who will only settle for the very best in terms of power, performance and driving dynamics: the 911 Turbo S. The heart of this most exclusive high-performance athlete is of course a six-cylinder boxer boosted by two exhaust gas turbochargers with variable turbine geometry, with an increase in power over the 911 Turbo by 30 to 530 bhp (390 kW). Maximum torque is a most impressive 700 Newton- metres (516lb-ft). At the same time this new top model comes as standard with all high-tech components available only as options on the "regular" 911 Turbo.

Despite its significant increase in power and dynamic performance, the new 911 Turbo S, at 11.4 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 24.8 mpg imp), does not consume any more fuel than the Porsche 911 Turbo, making ti by far the most fuel efficient sports car in its performance class.

The 911 Turbo S comes exclusively with seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) (Porsche's Double-Clutch Gearbox) conveying drive power to Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive. Driving safety optimised to an even higher standard is ensured by Dynamic Engine Mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) including a mechanical differential lock on th
e rear axle. In conjunction with Launch Control on the Sport Chrono Package Turbo like-wise featured as standard, 911 Turbo S accelerates from a standstill to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds and reaches 200km/h in 10.8 seconds.

Top Speed is 315 km/h or 195 mph. Extra-light and fading-resistant Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) provide the same outstanding performance in terms of stopping power and controlled application of the brakes.

The supreme level of standard equipment including Dynamic Bending Lights, 19-inch wheels in RS Spyder design with central locking, a three-spoke sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles, adaptive sports seats, cruise control, a CD/DVD changer and exclusive twin-tone leather upholstery in Black/Creme or Black/Titanium Blue additionally underlines the outstanding class and caliber of this first Turbo S in five years.

Porsche Museum Celebrates its First Birthday Sunday, January 31 2010

More than 530,000 visitors from all over the world, 2,555 guided tours and 14,326 grilled steaks at the Christophorus Restaurant - just one year after opening, the Museum of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is looking back on January 31, 2010 at a very positive story of success. "In its first 365 days our Museum has developed into a truly dynamic and living enterprise. In many respects we have significantly exceeded even our own ambitious expectations", states Achim Stejskal, the Director of the Porsche Museum.

On the occasion of the first birthday of the Museum visitors have the opportunity for the first time to look behind the scenes. The glass doors of the Museum Workshop, for example, are being opened to offer a glimpse of the work done by the mechanics in restoring historical Porsche cars. The event level normally not open to visitors is likewise being included in the birthday activities. Apart from a Porsche Cinema specially established for the occasion, children also have the opportunity to show their creativity here in all kinds of do-it-yourself exercises. And visitors are able to take a seat in a Porsche 911 Speedster for a truly unique photographic memory.

Enthusiasts of motorsports will also be thrilled by the experience, with Porsche works driver Mar Lieb offering questions all about motorsport during a special hour for autographs. On the occasion he will even be presenting his equipment and racing driver's gear.

Presenting a Porsche 911 GT3 R of the 2010 season, racing engineer will demonstrate how he obtains valuable data for racing challenges on his laptop. "We will even be starting our cars regularly on this special day both in the Exhibition and in the Museum Workshop - really a unique experience in sound", adds Museum Director Achim Stejskal.

2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

Porsche traditionally has emphasized efficiency, but the new flagship 911 gives a new meaning to its high-performance label. While its acceleration, braking and handling capabilities make it a true super sports car, it goes about its business with a thriftiness that is equally remarkable and by no means the norm in its class. With 20 more horsepower, and a 13 percent increase in fuel economy, the new 911 Turbo is indeed more powerful and more efficient.

"We are very excited to welcome the all-new 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo into the family", said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. "More than ever, this supercar is a technological tour de force, and the seemingly unanimous accolades from the media support what we already believe; this is the best 911 Turbo ever."

The 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo features the first entirely new engine in its storied 35-year history. The new flat-six boxer engine now delivers 500 horsepower, 20 more than the previous power plant. Maximum torque is up by 15 to 516 lb. ft. when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package Turbo.

All of this means that the new 911 Turbo can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds when combined with the new, highly acclaimed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Top track speed is 194 mph for both the Coupe and the Cabriolet models and its EPA estimates are a best-in-class 17 mpg and 25 mpg highway for the new Coupe when equipped with the PDK transmission.

"The Porsche 911 Turbo has always represented the pinnacle of the 911 model line since it was first introduced in 1974," said von Platen. "Now, 35 years later, the Turbo is still considered the standard when looking for the perfect combination of supercar performance with everyday drivability."

North, South, East and West: Four Great Porsche Driving Roads

America has great driving roads in every state, but a few rise to truly epic status. Here, at each point of the American compass, is a destination worthy of a Porsche and a weekend.

North: The Poudre Canyon, Colorado/ Wyoming Border
Colorado is a hard state in which to find a bad vista, but the Poudre Canyon northwest of Denver out-spectaculars even the Rocky's most majestic peaks, with its distinctive sense of driving through a crevasse in the earth. Sheer cliffs 500 feet tall rise on either side of your path, while what often prove to be bald eagles wheel and soar far overhead. Open the sunroof, lean back (make sure you're a passenger, please) and you might catch a herd of bighorn sheep clinging to the precipices, surefooted as they navigate ledges mere inches wide.

South: Alligator Alley, Miami to Sarasota, South Florida
Officially, the maps call it an interstate, but locals inevitably refer to this trans-Florida route as Alligator Alley, since it cuts through the core of the famous Everglades. Embark westward from Miami, and at first the nickname seems fanciful. But somewhere along the route, a long dark shape will stir on the other side of the chain-link fence, and suddenly the realization will hit you: those aren't waterloogged cypress branches. The toothy reptilian representatives of the Real Wild have come out to mark their territory, sunning themselves on creek banks, in sizes ranging from three feet on up to size of the vehicle that you are driving. Congratulations, you're living an episode of the nature channel.

East: Franconia Notch, New Hampshire
Yes, Tolkien's hobbit-inhabited Middle Earth really exists, complete with verdant valleys, tiny high-peaked cottages, and sun-dappled high meadows. Head north five hours from Boston to Franconia Notch, and after you crane your neck to take in epic mountain peaks, get off the interstate and wander down country lanes lined with cathedral vaults of tree cover. This confluence of mountain ranges near the juncture of New Hampshire and Vermont spends half its life swathed in deep blankets of white. But it shows a very different face during New England's short, fierce summers: pocket-sized towns with faded shingles and brilliant flowerbeds, as impossibly idyllic as Tolkien's Shire, welcome the visitor to a fantasyland.

West: The Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 101), San Francisco to Monterey
10,000 television commercials shot from helicopters can't all be wrong: the Pacific Coast Highway, a ribbon of asphalt that unspools along the rocky rim of California, is as spectacularly beautiful as the footage suggests. With the sea on one side, stark rock outcroopings on the other, and an endlessly beguiling series of serpentine curves ahead, it's the quintessential "top down, weekend cruisin" experience. From sea-lion watching at the Santa Cruz jetty to Monterey winery tours to William Randolph Hearst's spectacular San Simeon estate, the Pacific Coast Highway appeals endlessly to the soul as well as the eye.

2010 Porsche Boxster/Cayman-10 Best Cars

  "P" Stands for Perfect

There are a lot of words beginning with the letter "P" that can describe the mechanically identical Boxster and Cayman-poised and profitable leap to mind-but we think the most appropriate one is perfect. It's certainly hard to think otherwise when the Boxster offers a driving experience so sublime and so tactile that it's really only rivaled by the Cayman's. Every spin of the steering wheel, every push of a pedal, every flat blat from the flat-six engines, they're all calibrated to deliver one thing: unparalleled automotive pleasure.
The list of strengths goes on. The structures are girder-level rigid whether you opt for the tintop Cayman or the droptop Boxster. Operating the manual transmission is an act of models(which raised gas mileage and widened the already potent band) and the slick, dual-clutch PDK gearbox for folks who no longer wish to use a clutch pedal. Power went up, too, with base models gaining 10 (Boxster) and 20 (Cayman) horsepower and the respective S cars getting an additional 15 and 25 horses.
Beyond that, they're livable and luxurious with good cargo room from their two trunks as well as supportive seats and leather everywhere (including on the coat hooks and vent slats). This is the 11th appearance on our 10Best list for the Boxster and the fourth for its hardheaded sibling.
Hail Boxster. Hail Cayman. Long may they reign.

Porsche Panamera Awarded the Golden Steering Wheel

The Porsche Panamera has been awarded the Golden Steering Wheel as the Best New Car of the Year in the Luxury Performance Class. With its combination of supreme comfort and outstanding sportiness, and through its unique design, Porsche's Gran Turismo convinced the 50-man jury made up of racing drivers, engineers, celebrities and the senior editors of the Auto Bild Magazine Group trying out the candidates on thorough test drives. Before receiving this outstanding award, the Panamera had already been chosen by readers as one of the five best models in the luxury performance class with experts putting the car through its paces in the final contest on a test track in Italy for two enduring days.

This year this special prize presented for the first time by publisher Axel Springer in 1976 was awarded not "just" by the German Sunday newspaper Bild am Sonntag, but rather by a group of publications including the Auto Bild Motoring Journal and its European sister publications, making the coveted award even more significant than ever. Michael Macht, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, received the trophy on Wednesday evening from Bernd Wieland, Editor in chief of Auto Bild, at the headquarters of the Axel Springer AG in Berlin.
